Chile Opens Farm to Produce Medical Cannabis Oil

For many years now Latin America has suffered from an ongoing war between drug cartels. International drug trafficking causes violent operations and huge problems that cost many human lives, but also a lot of resources every year. But, in that perspective, Chile wasn’t unaffected.

Although the selling and growing of marijuana in Chile is illegal, the use of the plant is not.

But now the government of Chile seems to take the lead and takes initiatives in order to make big changes by starting a pilot medical marijuana program that will supply patients with medical marijuana oil. In Colbún, part of the Maule region of the country, they started working on a medical marijuana plantation.

Two years ago, after Uruguay legalized marijuana, Chile initiated a legalization program and now they move one step further to cultivate an area of 9,150 square foot with marijuana. Their plan is to cultivate marijuana so they can later produce their own medical marijuana oil.

A non-profit foundation called The Daya that promotes marijuana use for medical purposes, was granted by the Chilean government permission to grow medical marijuana. This would become the biggest legal marijuana cultivation in Latin America. The project will be sponsored a Santiago municipality, La Florida. Additionally the University of Valparaiso and Chile Pharmacopoeia, a chemistry faculty, will be in charge of quality control, offering scientific and technical expertise in order to set parameters and procedures for a reliable and safe marijuana oil.

According to Claudio Orrego, governor of metropolitan Santiago, the marijuana grown in Colbún will be used for medicine as well as research.

As governments begin to reform their policies in Latin America, medical cannabis and CBD oil might become the starting point of pro-marijuana change and a key factor to ending the drug trafficking issues.
