Illinois Awards First 5 Recreational Marijuana Retail Licenses

Marijuana Store

Illinois regulators aren’t wasting any time when it comes to getting recreational marijuana licenses approved. Five medical marijuana dispensaries have obtained approval to operate. They are spread out throughout the state.

The first actual sales of recreational marijuana cannot take place until January 1, 2020, according to The Chicago Tribune. Two of the five cities where recreational marijuana sales are approved are on-board. Three haven’t made up their minds yet.

Approved retail store locations, so far, are in:

  • Canton
  • Joliet
  • Effingham
  • Mundelein
  • Naperville

Green Thumb Industries’ Effingham location is one of the approved recreational marijuana retailers.

Spokeswoman for the dispensary, Linda Marsicano said, “GTI is thrilled that our five stores received the state of Illinois’ first approvals. GTI has had a great relationship with the city of Naperville since 2015 … We continue to talk and work with the city on this important issue.”

Several of the cities that have approved recreational marijuana retailers plan to hold public forums and rallies before making any decisions on allowing or banning recreational sales.
