More than 2,000 Illinois residents have applied for medical marijuana ID cards since the application process initiated a few days on September 2.
Bob Morgan, project coordinator for the Illinois Medical Cannabis Pilot Program, said that officials anticipated a few hundred people would begin registering in the first few days, not thousands.
Authorities began accepting medical marijuana applications from people whose last names start with letters A through L. Everyone else can apply starting November 1.
Morgan calls the vast numbers “a promising sign that the program is on track to fulfill its key purpose — alleviating the pain and suffering for thousands of Illinoisans.”
The apparent demand for medical marijuana cards also means that dispensaries and cultivation centers will be busy and need to hire many employees to keep up with demand. This will create many more marijuana-related jobs in the Illinois medical marijuana industry.
Dispensaries are expected to open in Illinois around January 2015.
