Berkeley Becomes U.S.’s First Recreational Marijuana Sanctuary City

Sanctuary City Marijuana

Berkeley, California has become the nation’s first sanctuary city for the recreational marijuana industry.

The Berkeley City Council has voted to enact a resolution to become a sanctuary for marijuana consumers, businesses, providers and property owners, according to CBS Local San Francisco.

The resolution specifically applies to “procedures regarding staff interaction with the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) related to the enforcement of federal drug laws.”

Berkeley Mayor Jesse Arreguin proposed the resolution along with Council members Ben Bartlett and Cheryl Davila.

Mayor Arreguin’s resolution directly opposes U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ announcement to crackdown on states that have legalized recreational marijuana.
